Etchings from the Self-Replicating Nanotechnology series are a response to the idea of "gray goo"; Eric Drexler's doomsday theory that self-replicating nano-machines will multiply exponentially, taking over the world while devouring all carbon containing matter. In place of "gray goo" I have created a world consumed by the proliferation of rainbow goo.The etched shapes are conflations of viral and rainbow imagery, the later acting as a stand-in for weather and the sky. The Future is Rainbow Nanobots illustrates a theoretical future resulting from the transformation of the atmosphere by human activities. |
